Tijuana Brass

I’ve been reading the rumour mill since the Mexican League disbanded the Tijuana Potros, and even though I thought it’d be a stretch for the Golden League to swoop in an plant a team in Tijuana, it looks like they’re interested in doing exactly that.

The Golden Baseball League (GBL) announced today that they have entered into a Letter of Intent with a group to bring professional baseball back to Tijuana for the upcoming 2009 season.

Last season, the Calgary Vipers used the Yuma Scorpions’ proximity to the Mexican border as an excuse to promote “Margarita Madness”, so here’s betting they carry that promo over to the Tijuana team if it comes to be.

Man, those Mexican WBC jerseys are beauties, eh? Baseball needs more colour like this. Even the adjustable-fit caps add a common-man appeal to the squad. The red belts seal the deal.

Personally, I’m looking forward to the chance to see a Mexican baseball team compete semi-regularly here in Calgary. I imagine they’ll use a fair amount of local players, and I’m interested in finding out whether there are subtle changes in strategy and style in the way they play.

Pending no other problems, a formal announcement of the ownership group, and team name should occur in the very near future.

I don’t remember very much high school Spanish, but I’m going to go ahead and suggest Tijuana Dios Mios! as a name. Maybe they can get Mario Mendoza to manage. Last I read, he was available.

Hey Xolager — you sure know your stuff when it comes to the Golden Baseball League. Your prediction of Mario Mendoza as manager is correct and he will have Jose “Peluche” Pena as his pitching coach and Jorge Fitch as his bench coach. All three are Mexican League legends and Mexican League Hall of Famers — even though Mario is more famous for the Mendoza Line in the U.S. The team will be known as the Potros and will visit Calgary this summer.

The formal press conference is January 22nd, but the official signing of the Franchise Agreement and Stadium Lease took place last Thursday in Tijuana. Now that we have the 10th team the schedule should be finalized and out in the next week.
