Darryl Brinkley en Tijuana

It doesn’t seem that long ago that Darryl Brinkley was being recognised by the Calgary Vipers organization for achieving his 2000th professional hit.

That photo was taken on August 9th, 2008.  Here’s that has happened since:

September 5, 2008
Calgary Vipers: Traded OF Darryl Brinkly to the Bridgeport Bluefish of the Atlantic League for future considerations.

October 31, 2008
Calgary Vipers: Exercised the 2009 contract option for OF Darryl Brinkley.

February 2, 2009
Calgary Vipers: Traded OF Darryl Brinkley to the Tijuana Potros for a player to be named later.

Noooooo!

I’m a big Mr 400 Darryl Brinkley fan.  He was a thrill to watch in all aspects of a baseball game.  I think it’s ridiculous that he never got a shot at the majors, because all the guy ever did as a Viper was hit, hit, and hit some more.  Oh yeah, he also ran the bases with ease and covered left field like rainfall.

And he did it all in his late 30s.  Image what Mr 400 could have done in his prime in the bigs?

I always thought he’d end up in a coaching role with the Vipers in the near future (and  guess that door isn’t technically closed), but he’d have to stop hitting for teams to not want him on their player roster – and that just hasn’t happened yet.

He’s 40 years old now.  I remember my Dad’s 40th birthday.  It was a lot of fun, but there was no threat of him stretching a double into a triple, or stealing a base with incredible ease.

I found Brinkley’s departure to Bridgeport to be quite odd.  I went on vacation, came home in time for Game 2 of the GBL Championship Finals vs. Orange County (damn that was a cold night), and Brinkley had been traded in my absence?  During the playoffs?  I’m a selfish and irrational fan who thinks Mr 400 could have made a few runs difference in Game 5, but I also understand Brinkley wanted to watch his son play football.  Family has to come first.

When Mario Mendoza and the Tijuana Potros march into town on August 7, 2009, let’s welcome Mr 400 back to Calgary with a standing ovation.

(…and does anyone in Viperland know who these two players to be named later/future considerations we received in exchange for Brinkley happen to be?  Just asking.)
