Fan 960 Ignores Golden Opportunity

Game Two of Golden Baseball League Championship Finals is tonight in Tucson, Arizona, at 8:00PM Calgary-time.

Tangent:

Maybe it was just me, but the local Tucson Radio station that covers the Toros and broadcasts play-by-play of their games didn’t seem to like Canadians… and then when I “convinced” the site I was American, it didn’t like my old Mac.  I had to refresh the Pointstreak Scoreboard all night to keep up to date with the score.  Where has Pointstreak’s game-day visual play-by-play gone?

I know I’m not the only Calgarian who wants to hear, on the radio, live play-by-play of our local baseball heroes fighting for glory.  Calgary is a city that, en masse, likes winning sports teams more than just about anything.  If the local sports radio, The Fan 960, ever had a perfect opportunity to promote baseball on the radio here in our fair city, it’s now, while the team is up 1-0 in the finals and is still out-of-town.

But no, the Fan 960 is airing an NFL game tonight.

A quick tally:

  • Number of NFL teams in Calgary: 0
  • Number of GBL teams in Calgary: 1

We should expect more from our local sports radio.  For one, anyone that cares about the NFL is probably certainly going to watch the game on TV, eh?  Airing an NFL game is just The Fan 960’s way of filling evening air time.  If they’re just looking to fill the airwaves, why can’t they do it with something that matters to this city?  Who matters more to this city right now: Kerry Collins or “The Bat From The Hat” Drew Miller? Santonio Holmes or GLROTY Colin Moro?

C’mon.

I’m in total agreement, I just sent an email to Patrick Haas who is in charge of team broadcasts and media relations about this sad state of affairs. Here is a team that is trying to win over fans and then don’t take the time to ensure out of town playoff games are broadcast. I tuned in to the Tucson-St.George series with no problem at all, however when the series has Calgary playing south of the border we become persona non grata. Shame on the Vipers organization for allowing this to happen, shame as well on the Golden Baseball League!

Well said, Al. I’m going to do the same.

    Here’s what I sent…

    Dear Mr. Haas:

When I click on the “listen live” link on calgaryvipers.com so that could/can hear Games 1 and Game 2 of the GBL Finals. Here’s the error message I get.

“Due to licensing restrictions, we are not able to allow access to the content you are requesting from outside the United States. We are sorry we can no longer provide access to Canada. If you currently reside in the United States, please select one of the options below to process your request. Please allow up to 60 hours to process your request.”

Why didn’t the Vipers organization look into this issue in advance? Why was nothing done to fix this after Game 1? Why can’t I just listen to my favourite team?

    Thank-you for your reply:
    Xo

    Hi all
For whatever reason I am able to listen to the game online on the Cool 1450. I understand that other people are having issues with is. Not sure of the explanation….. I just clicked on the “Listen Live” icon on the Vipers website. Not long to wait til tomorrow to see it LIVE!!!
